30 Characters: #9 – Jakinda “Jax” Rivera

November 9, 2011

The daughter of Puerto Rican immigrants, Jakinda (known to her friends as Jax) grew up on a Tomato farm in the panhandle of Florida. It was a hard upbringing for the rambunctious child.  In her early teens her family spent an evening at a low budget magic show.  Jax witnessed at horrible display…and was fascinated. She fell in love the illusions and close up magic and began studying on her own…reading every book in the local library on slight of hand and stage magic.  It wasn’t long before she had mastered those techniques…but she wasn’t satisfied with only that much.  Her father forbade her from continuing on with that life style. His more traditional conservative viewpoint couldn’t fathom of a magicians lifestyle.  Months of heated discussions led to a final explosive confrontation. Jax ran away from home. With no real plans or forethought…she found herself in a very small traveling side show circus. An elderly magician who went by the stage name The Illusionarian took Jax under his wing. He taught her all the secrets he had learned over his over half century at an illusionist.

Young and naive…Jax didn’t at first realize the circus she traveled with was not much more than a front for a traveling robbery ring.  When she did finally discovered the secret…she opted to join in on the thievery.  During a heist gone wrong…The Illusionarian and many others from the gang crew were killed.  Police pressure forced the circus to scatter.  Alone and on the run Jax is now living on the streets, using her wits and illusionist skills to move from one town to the next.  She’s searching for something…her place in the world…but she has yet to find where that place is.  She recently got off the bus in Omaha, Nebraska. She’s heard of Offutt Air Force Base and the super powered beings that live and work there…and thinks that maybe she could learn (or maybe steal) a thing or two from them.
